Seen around

This post has been long overdue! how you

My neighborhood is super quirky and you never know what you might find!
I love walking home and I take the same route most every day.
Funny how you can walk by something every day and not notice it...

Yes your eyes are not deceiving you!
It is a mannequin sitting on the ledge of this building with a bucket on
its head! FAR OUT!

Besides this awesome sighting, life is what it is.
you get up , feed the pets, go to work,
go home, pay the bills, watch tv and go to sleep.
And do it all over the next day. It does sound terribly boring
but I enjoy it.
I love the structure of the routine.

On the food front I am deeply obsessed by Indian food.
I don't know why but I dream of the spices, the heat and the comfort.

Yesterday I made curried chickpeas with cauliflower stew.
This hit the spot! I added some sriracha sauce for some heat
and served it over basmati rice and Tikka Masala turkey breast.

I saw this Barbie cake in a nearby bakery.
I don't like this bakery because the owner looks dirty
(her nose is full of HUGE blackheads)
and she reeks of smoke. And let's face it the cake looks way too
handmade (Pinterest fail)

I also saw this cruddy but vintage oven on the sidewalk.
I love the design and I am sad it is ending its life that way

I will go in a Quebec road trip to Saint- Barthelemy village.....

I love Fall!

I love the chill in the air (especially since I spent the summer drenched), the colors, the food (I love soup).

In the past week we had 2 cats at the vet so we are back to a super tight budget. I don't really mind because last year clothes still fit me...

and this is a miracle! The pantry and the freezer are full of staples and I have access to really cheap food.

Some of it is border line expired, so I cook it when I bring it home or I freeze it.

I want to  share some of my favorite plants I spotted while walking

I truly wish I had tons of decorative cabbages

Oleanders always remind me of Italy.
That's what Rome smells like.
Their smell is enchanting.

Near my house there is a cat cafe Le Chat L'Heureux (the happy kitties) I walk past it every day.

I wish you a peaceful night and a sunny Monday

I will pack our lunches for tomorrow while watching Fear of the Walking Dead.

Are any of you watching it? What are your thoughts?

In the garden

Every week, I make the garden a little bit more mine.

It is hard because I feel Dad everywhere but I am sure he would agree with my changes.

I think in the last few years he got lazy and just didn't bother with varied plant choices....

The garden is in dire need of fertilizer ! Which I will apply shortly .

And it needs color, but it is harder since it is a shade garden...
I decided to put a pumpkin for fall color...
Those darn squirrels did quite to party with it...

The mums are doing better!

I planted most of my spring bulbs: Snowdrops, crocuses,
bluebells....and a few bare root astilbes.
Like this one....It will be pink

Of course I am crossing my fingers!

This morning I went to visit Yoda at the vet.
She spent the weekend there....

Since she's diabetic and had diarrhea and some vomiting
for a couple of was best they keep her to monitor the situation.

This morning she ate dry food and moist food and tried to make a break for it!
She is on the mend!
her cat friends miss her....

I had to replace my old laptop and I finally figured out how to add pictures to
my blog posts, with help of course, and hopefully I will post more often!

Take care!

Catching up!

Wow! Already September 18th!

Back in late August, I celebrated my 51st birthday. That is such a strange number, I feel 35 years old at most!

I got beautiful and surprising gifts!

such as....

Yes faithful readers the Le Creuset gods gifted me a beautiful turquoise braiser .

in its original box no less!

This had been on my bucket list ever since I saw Jamie Oliver cook with one.
Dan said: I hope you won't get mad because it costs a lot of money...
Why would I get mad it is not my money after all!
Love it!

I also got lots of goodies from Vero, which I use and love!

This is so cute! it is a portable desk grill with all the accessories....
When life at the office is super dry and boring, I re-arrange it.

I've hated my Dad's fridge from the get go.

even if it was fairly recent, my Dad had it fixed twice and
all the veggies in the crispers would freeze anyways.

It was cracked inside and super noisy...
so it was not a big surprise when it went dead on
Labor Day!

It just made a lot of noise and stopped cooling on top.
The freezer kept freezing, thank god!

We managed to keep our food cool with the help of our back up fridge
(downstairs) and a cooler.
I have to tell you that going down the stairs
15 times to prepare dinner was a real bummer!

Here is the new fridge
I love it but it is not the one I wanted...
It just didn't fit!

new fridge smell, even better than new car smell!

Sleep tight!

Time Flies

I was in shock to see I last blogged on August 14th! Whoa, time sure flies!

And it is not like I wanted a break....I wanted to blog 20 times and then I did other stuff!

So I'm back at work full time, and it is a-okay. the succession is still active and and I have no idea what is going on and that is okay too.

I've let go of a lot of issues and problems...and what do you know? They have a life of their own and fix themselves when I let them be!

We are cleaning out the basement, my Dad's , of course and fortunately there isn't a lot of things!

I found about 15 bottles of wine made by my Dad's Portuguese gardener...They are about 10 years old and did not age as well as they should.....

I also found this...

A vintage Miss Piggy mug!, yes in my Dad's basement, all by herself...
I remember that he loved Miss Piggy and she made him laugh...

The grapes are ready to harvest but they taste like crap!
This is the Concord grape variety...
Maybe they lacked water, they are small and very sour!
I remember making some fantastic concord grape jelly...

I made Potsticker Noodle Bowl from Iowa Girl eats

It was easy and so yummy....I will be making this recipe very often!

Here's the link : Potsticker noodle bowl

This girl has some really great recipes, even if your are not Gluten challenged.

The recipe calls for a bag of coleslaw mix...I used to get that in my deep, deep suburbia
for .99cents...Now that I live in the city, I can.t find any!
How crazy is that?
Don't the manbun hipster people eat coleslaw???
Thank God I had a cabbage and carrots in the fridge!!!

also added a couple of teaspoons of toasted sesame oil...and some sprouted mung beans

Another lovely weekend is upon us and I have a load in the dryer!

Take care!

Whoa time flies!

I have been on a progressive return to work and it is okay. Not the big love affair with my job, but I could be doing a lot worse!

People are actually nicer to me....Maybe they're scared I will implode or something....

Here's what I've been up to:

I realized I had 2 big celery bunches that were near the point of no return.....

I chopped it, and bagged it to be frozen to add to soups.

I dehydrated the celery leaves. They will add a lot of flavor to
soups ans stews.

I regularly buy bunches of dill but I find they go icky really fast.
This time I just threw the leftovers in the dehydrator!

Here's the celery bits all ready for the freezer.

Do you know Tasty? It's on Facebook and on YouTube.
They have really fast and tasty recipes, this one is eggplant rollatini with
ricotta cheese and lemon zest! DELICIOUS!

I still had a lot of raw almonds from my Dad's fridge...
I made some homemade Tamari Almonds
 Easy and tasty!

Here's a link for the recipe

Nothing new on the thrifting front....

Oh well!

Havea great evening !

New Things

If you're a regular reader, you've probably noticed that I love trying out new things (kitchen related mostly)....

In the past 2 weeks I tried 2 really different things!

I dry aged steaks and I dehydrated shredded potatoes for future hash browns!

First the steaks: I love steak and it is an occasional splurge. I was thinking, maybe there's a way to improve an okay steak...Well there is!

First there was a sale and I bought 4 bone in rib steaks for $26. You remove the packaging, you rinse the steaks and dry them well with paper towels.

Then you loosely wrap each steak in cheese cloth....

Then you put the steaks in a tray in the refrigerator for at least 3 days,
Unwrapping them each day and re-wrapping in the same cheesecloth.

These are 2 of the steaks after 3 days. You will need to trim the dried bits but
there aren't a lot after only 3 days.

This was a success! The $6.50 steaks tasted like $30 steaks.

The only things is that this takes a lot of place in the fridge, i you have a second fridge it will be perfect!

If you need more info do a web search and all your questions will be answered.

Next the de-hydrated potatoes....

Well it happens that I have a dehydrator...
and I love to preserve things! And potatoes were super cheap!

So this goes much faster if you have a mechanical shredder...
and you will need to soak the potatoes...
Those just came out of the dehydrator

2 jars of hash browns to make a casserole

This is the link I visited for all the info:

I will be making some more on Thursday!

Be wel, be thrifty!
